Things to remember to remind your 4th grader

Homework Policy
Students in 4th grade will receive homework almost every day.  How much your child brings home depends on how well time was spent during the school day.  I will try to give students time to complete work in class, but because of choices students make and the different paces students work, not all students will complete the work before the end of the day.
Homework is the student's responsibility.  When a homework assignment is not completed and turned in on time, an incomplete homework notice will come home in your child's planner.  Please sign this form and send it back to school.  Not turning in homework assignments may result in loss recess time to complete their work. Late assignments will also, as the school year goes on, lower your student's grade. (See below)

During the first trimester, student's grades will not be affected by late assignments.  The first part of teh school year is definitely a transition.  Students need to get familiar with the building, each other, and the classroom expectations.  This is the reason why late work won't lower a grade during the first trimester.

During the second and thrid trimesters, all late assignments will only be worth 50% of the score earned.  Example: Matt came to school unprepared and forgot he had homework the previous night.  After the assignment is late, Matt stays in for recess and finishes his late assignment.  After the teacher checks his assignment, Matt gets 90/100 for a 90%.  Because the assignment was late, Matt's 90% is divided in half (90/2=45) and his new score is 45%.

Grading Scale
This is the first year of getting letter grades.  The following will be used to figure grades:
95-100%      A
90-94%       A-
87-89%       B+
83-86%       B
80-82%       B-

73-76%       C
70-72%       C-
67-69%       D+
63-66%       D
60-62%       D-
Below 60%  F

Assignment Planners
It is the student's responsibility to record all assignments accurately and neatly.  Assignments are posted on the board at the front of the room.  I encourage you to review your child's planner every night.  I ask that the planner be signed each night by a parent/guardian to ensure that our communication line stays open.  Feel free to write questions or information that I may need in the space provided.  I will sign the student's planners at the end of each day.

Home Folders
Students will bring home their take home folder every day with their homework as well as handouts and work from class.  The folder will have many other pockets that hold other subjects.  This folder is to come to school every day and go home every night.  It is very important that your child keep track of this for we use the work in their folder every day.  If you have a note, lunch money, or book orders be sure to have it in in an envelope labeled what it is and your child's name on it.    You are to only empty out the mailbox items pocket and leave all other pockets alone.  Please help your fourth grader be responsible and return their folder every day!

Our Reading Incentive Program
I expect students to read every night for 20 minutes.  They will need to record their time on a monthly calendar I will send home.  A parents initials are required to get the minutes approved.  If your child reads 200 minutes for the month they will receive a free homework pass.

Throughout the year I keep track of how many minutes children read at home.  our goal is 3600 minutes.  The top 3 students will be recognized at our all school assembly at the end of the year.
